(ToR) Consultant to Develop a Financial Literacy Module and Organize a Capacity Building Session

Job Description

Rwanda Women's Network is a non-governmental organization focusing on empowering women for self-transformation and gender equality for over 20 years. Our vision is to create a healthy, empowered, and peaceful Rwandan society.  RWN mission is to work towards the improvement of the socio-economic welfare of women in Rwanda through enhancing their effort to meet their basic needs. Its mission is delivered through five key focus programs; Health Care and Support, Gender-Based Violence Response and Prevention, Socio-economic empowerment, Education and Knowledge Sharing and Governance, and Leadership.

Teenage pregnancy occurs with considerable variation in magnitude and consequences among different countries and regions. In each case, a variety of complex socio-economic factors are involved including poverty, communities, and families acceptance of child marriage, culture behaviors, gender inequality, sexual violence, lack of education, and information among others. Adolescent pregnancy is a health, human rights, and development issue. Pregnancy undermines a girl’s ability to exercise her rights to education, health, and autonomy. It also prevents her from realizing her potential and adversely impacts the baby. A country’s economy is also affected by teenage pregnancies as adolescent mothers are prevented from entering the workforce.

In addition to the above-mentioned consequences teenage mothers also experience a vicious cycle of poverty; teenage pregnancies most times happen in families in poverty, the extra burden of taking care of a child makes the poverty worse, teenage mothers’ poverty sometimes causes other risky behaviors and unhealthy relationships which in turn might lead to another pregnancy thus the trapping of the poor teenage mother and her family into staying in poverty.

Rwanda Women's Network as an organization focusing on empowering women for self-transformation with support from Rwanda Governance Board is implementing the Teenage Mothers for a Better Future (Imbere Heza) project and aims at capacitating these teenage mothers with knowledge and skills around financial literacy especially training in goal-setting, planning, budgeting saving, and investment to build girls’ financial autonomy.
